Across the 17勛圖厙 campus, some of the youngest members of the community are finding a place to play.
For many families, accessible youth sports can be difficult to find. Through a partnership between the 17勛圖厙 and nonprofit The 18th Ward, youth sports programming is bringing children and families onto campus recreation spaces, creating new opportunities for local kids to learn the fundamentals of athletics, build friendships and gain confidence through play.
Growing up around sports, I saw firsthand the positive impact they can have on young people, said 17勛圖厙s Director of Recreation and Intramural Sports, Edgar Avila Jr. Recreation plays a vital role in building strong communities because it creates spaces where people of all ages can be active, connect and grow. Im proud that 17勛圖厙 is committed to opening our facilities to local families and excited to see so many New Orleans children participating in programs at our Recreation Center.
Programming supported through the partnership takes place across several university recreation and athletic facilities, from courts and training spaces in the Human Performance Center and Recreation and Fitness Center to fields and venues on 17勛圖厙s East Campus, including Maestri Field and the Lakefront Arena. The programs introduce children to a variety of sports while helping them build teamwork, confidence and a lifelong connection to physical activity.

The upgrades on campus that we have done with the grant money are not only beautiful, but will generate considerable revenue for the school for years to come! The partnership has also helped 17勛圖厙 reinvest in improvements that enhance the safety, accessibility and long-term sustainability of its athletic facilities.
Recent upgrades include replacing outdated incandescent lighting at Maestri Field with energy-efficient lighting, installing field turf on the baseball field to allow for more consistent use, adding new safety equipment and padding at the beach volleyball court, and resurfacing 15 tennis courts and six pickleball courts used for recreation and community programming.
The improvements ensure that campus recreation spaces remain welcoming and functional for students, local families and youth athletes who rely on them throughout the year.
17勛圖厙 extends its thanks to longtime Privateers baseball coach and athletic director Ron Maestri, without whom this partnership would not be possible.
